Receiving your NDIS plan is an exciting milestone. But for many participants and families, it's also when the questions begin.
Which providers should I choose?
Where do I start?
Am I using my funding the right way?
At Joystep, we've met many participants who had an approved NDIS plan but weren't sure what to do next. That's where a Support Coordination can make a real difference.

Understanding Your NDIS Plan
Your NDIS plan tells you what funding has been approved, but it doesn't always explain how to put that funding into practice.
Support coordinators can assist with:
Finding and connecting with service providers
Coordinating different types of supports
Building your skills to manage your plan independently
Resolving any issues that arise with services or providers
One participant came to Joystep several months after receiving their first NDIS plan. Although funding had already been approved, they hadn't started any supports because they weren't sure where to begin.
Together, we discussed their goals, compared local providers and helped organise the services that best suited their needs. Within a short time, they had started accessing the supports included in their NDIS plan and felt much more confident about managing their funding.
Support Coordination Is About More Than Finding Providers
Support Coordination doesn't just help you find providers. It also helps make sure your supports work well together and continue to match your goals as your needs change.
Confidence in understanding your NDIS plan and what it can fund
Access to a wide range of services and community activities
Skills to manage your supports independently over time
Peace of mind knowing you have someone to advocate for your needs
For example, if you want to try a new therapy or join a local group, your support coordinator can help you explore options and make arrangements. They can also help you navigate challenges, such as changing providers or adjusting your plan as your needs evolve.

Choosing the Right Support Coordinator
Not all Support Coordinators work in the same way. Choosing someone who understands your goals and communicates well can make a big difference to your NDIS journey.
Here are a few things to look for:
Someone who listens
A good Support Coordinator should take the time to understand your goals before recommending providers or services.
Clear communication
The NDIS can be confusing. Your coordinator should explain things in plain English and make sure you understand your options.
Knowledge of local services
A coordinator with strong local connections can introduce you to a wider range of providers and community supports that suit your needs.
A focus on your goals
Support Coordination isn't about choosing services for you—it's about helping you make informed decisions that work for your situation.
Getting the Most from Support Coordination
Once you have a support coordinator, there are ways to get the best results from your partnership:
Be open about your goals and challenges - The more your coordinator knows, the better they can help.
Stay involved in decisions - Your voice matters. Make sure you understand and agree with plans.
Ask questions - If something is unclear, don’t hesitate to ask for explanations.
Keep track of appointments and progress - This helps you see how your supports are working.
Give feedback – Let your coordinator know what's working well and if your needs change over time.
