Exploring Mt Wilga Private Rehabilitation Hospital: A Closer Look at the NDIS Therapy Team

5 min read

When people think about NDIS Therapy Supports, they often picture physiotherapy sessions or exercises in a gym. In reality, comprehensive NDIS Therapy Supports is about much more than physical capacity building—it is about helping people achieve a wide variety of NDIS goals through a collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach.  Coordinated Therapy Supports by a wide range of allied health professionals allows NDIS participants to build their physical, cognitive, social, sensory and psychological capacity and wellbeing, allowing them to improve their daily life across all life domains.

At Joystep, we believe the best way to support NDIS participants is to understand the Therapy Support services available within our local community—not simply by reading brochures or websites, but by visiting providers, meeting their teams and learning how supports are delivered in practice.

Recently, our Director, Samantha Pan, had the opportunity to visit Mt Wilga Private Rehabilitation Hospital in Hornsby at the invitation of NDIS Allied Health Manager, Dale Carn. During the visit, we toured the hospital and outpatient clinics, met members of the various multidisciplinary allied health teams and gained valuable insight into how Mt Wilga delivers Therapy Supports to NDIS participants, alongside the Outpatient and Day Program rehabilitation services.  While Mt Wilga Private Hospital is well known across NSW for offering high-quality Inpatient Rehabilitation services, the Outpatient services, including the NDIS Therapy Services, are equally as impressive.

Rather than simply introducing this facility, we'd like to share what we learnt and why we believe these observations may help individuals and families who are considering NDIS Therapy Supports or rehabilitation services.

An NDIS Therapy Service alongside a Rehabilitation Hospital with Extensive Experience

As part of Ramsay Health Care, one of Australia's largest private healthcare groups, Mt Wilga Private Rehabilitation Hospital has established a strong reputation for rehabilitation services across NSW.

The NDIS Therapy Team at Mt Wilga, is an NDIS registered provider, with registration to provide Therapy Supports to participants aged nine years and above, supporting adolescents and adults through their NDIS Plans.  The Mt Wilga NDIS Therapy Team works alongside the other Allied Health Teams at Mt Wilga, using shared gym spaces throughout the facility.  The Mt Wilga NDIS Therapy Team provides services in multiple Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology gyms spaces, as well as Occupational Therapy and Speech Pathology Treatment rooms, Psychology and Dietician consult rooms.

The Mt Wilga NDIS Therapy Team is part of the Mt Wilga Allied Health Team, with over 150 allied health staff employed across the site.  As a result of the large size of Mt Wilga’s Allied Health Team, they have access to a wide range of highly experienced staff with depth of knowledge across a range of disabilities and complex permanent conditions.

During our visit, what immediately stood out was the facility’s clear focus on functional capacity in everyday activities, rather than the medical model of treatment. Every area we toured was designed with one purpose—to help NDIS participants and patients gradually develop the skills and confidence needed to participate in everyday life.

The environment itself felt welcoming, spacious and purpose-built for capacity building and recovery, creating a setting where NDIS participants and patients can focus on their own goals at their own pace.

Bringing Different Therapy Disciplines Together

One of the greatest strengths we observed at Mt Wilga is its multidisciplinary approach to all service provision – both NDIS and rehabilitation.

Capacity building rarely involves just one challenge. A person recovering from a stroke, for example, may experience mobility difficulties, communication problems, reduced independence, emotional adjustment and nutritional concerns—all at the same time.

Mt Wilga brings together a team of experienced health professionals, including:

  • Physiotherapists

  • Occupational Therapists

  • Speech Pathologists

  • Exercise Physiologists

  • Psychologists

  • Dietitians

  • Counsellors

  • Social Workers

  • Hydrotherapy clinicians

From our conversations with the team, it was clear that collaboration is an important part of their therapy philosophy. Different disciplines regularly communicate with one another, helping ensure that therapy remains consistent and centred around each participant’s goals.

For families, this coordinated approach can make Therapy Supports feel more organised and easier to navigate during what is often a challenging experience.

Learning Through Real-Life Environments

One feature that particularly impressed us was Mt Wilga's newly developed Outdoor Mobility Garden.

Unlike a traditional therapy space, the garden has been carefully designed to simulate everyday community environments.

Participants and patients can practise walking across different surfaces, negotiating pathways, using mobility aids and building confidence in a supervised, safe setting before attempting mobility challenges in the community.

This may sound like a simple idea, but it reflects an important principle of modern therapy interventions—people recover best when therapy prepares them for real life rather than only practising inside a treatment room.

During our visit, Dale also shared that the garden is sometimes used by psychologists when appropriate. For some participants and patients, talking while walking outdoors can create a more relaxed environment than a traditional consultation room, helping support emotional wellbeing alongside physical wellbeing.

Hydrotherapy: Supporting Movement with Less Pain

Another highlight of our visit was the hospital's hydrotherapy facilities.

Hydrotherapy uses the unique properties of warm water to support physical capacity. The buoyancy of water reduces pressure on joints, allowing many participants and patients to practise movements that may be difficult or painful on land.

For individuals with degenerative neurological conditions, and participants nearing end of life, hydrotherapy can provide an effective way to reduce pain, and allow joint range of motion, while for a variety of other conditions, including ASD, cerebral palsy, spina bifida and other neurological conditions, hydrotherapy can be an effective environment to improve strength, balance and confidence while minimising discomfort.

Seeing these facilities gave us a better understanding of how different therapy approaches can complement one another as part of a multidisciplinary therapy program.

Recovery Is More Than Physical

One aspect of Mt Wilga that we particularly appreciated was its recognition that therapy services and capacity building extend beyond physical function.

Recovery often affects emotional wellbeing, confidence and social connection just as much as mobility.

The hospital hosts monthly NDIS participant social gatherings, providing opportunities for participants to connect with others experiencing similar challenges. These informal interactions can help reduce social isolation, encourage motivation and remind people that they are not alone.

We also learnt more about the important role played by the Social Work team. From inpatient discharge planning and connecting patients with appropriate community resources, to conducting NDIS Family Conferences and Community Engagement Groups - social workers are an integral part of both the rehabilitation services and the NDIS Therapy Service.

This broader view of Therapy Supports aligns closely with what we often see in the community—successful goal progression depends not only on clinical treatment but also on having the right supports in place in the community.

Supporting People with Permanent and Significant Disability

Applying for the NDIS can sometimes feel overwhelming. Understanding eligibility, gathering medical evidence and demonstrating how a disability affects everyday functioning often requires careful preparation.

Where appropriate, Joystep can assist individuals and families with NDIS application assistance, helping them understand the access process and coordinate the supporting documentation required for an application.

For participants who already have an NDIS plan, Joystep also provides Support Coordination, Plan Management, Support Worker Services, helping them continue working towards their NDIS goals and maintain independence at home and in the community.

Looking Ahead

We sincerely thank Dale Carn and the entire team at Mt Wilga Private Rehabilitation Hospital for welcoming us and generously sharing their knowledge and experience.

Supporting people with disabilities is rarely the work of one person or one organisation. It is a shared journey involving hospitals, clinicians, families and community providers, each playing an important role at different stages of recovery.

We look forward to continuing to strengthen connections across the disability community, so that more individuals and families can access the right support at the right time.
